CoinNews.net just posted an article and images of the Marine Corps Silver Medal that I designed for The United States Mint commemorating the centennial of World War I. The obverse image recognizes the Marine Corps victory over German defenders in the Battle of Belleau Wood that raged from June 1-26, 1918.
The courage and determination of the green U.S. Marines was extraordinary as they faced a battle hardened enemy in this brutal engagement. In one single image, I wanted to represent the high cost of victory that each American Marine was willing to pay.
